As early as 1912 the aspiration to organize scientific work in Matica Srpska resulted in the establishment of five expert assemblies. The assemblies were allowed to organize sections with particular tasks, should such necessity occur. The Assembly for Social Enlightenment and Books for the People is the predecessor of the Department of Social Sciences<\/p>\n
The Department of Social Sciences in its contemporary form was assembled after World War 2. The Scientific Department of Matica Srpska was established in December 1948 based on Article 25 of the Statute of Matica Srpska. On the 16th of January 1965 in a meeting of the Scientific Department separation into the Department of Natural Sciences and Department of Social Sciences was proposed. This proposition was accepted by the Management Board of Matica Srpska in the meeting held on the 6th of April 1965 and adopted by the General Assembly of Matica Srpska on the 30th of May 1965.<\/p>\n
The department operates under the management of the Secretary General of the Department and the Department Board.
